Our Home Reveal Part Three: Detoxifying our Home

Good morning, friends! And welcome to part three of our home reveal on the blog. Today I am sharing all of our tips on how to detox your home (they aren’t too intense, I promise!).

Call me crazy, call me a neat freak, I don’t mind either one. I am all about trying to keep our home as clean and pure as possible. Of course there are exceptions and certain things are out of our control, but when I can make an effort to create a blissful and non-toxic environment, you bet I am going to take advantage of that.

The environment can be gross af and we are the only ones in complete control over what we can do in our own homes, so why not make it as pure as we can?

There are a few key things that I have been doing to keep our new home as fresh as possible. To be honest, I think these are all very reasonable and aren’t too woo-woo or overboard (all about that balance). They are not too intimidating and are easy to bring into your own home!

Now let’s hop to it amigos!

Keeping House Plants in Each Room

It may be because my in-laws own a flower shop but keeping live plants in our home is truly one of my favorite parts about where we live. Our last apartment had a gorgeous window sill of succulents as you likely saw me post about on Instagram and we carried over the plant family into our new home. We don’t have the same window sill but we did adopt a few gorgeous plants for the space. These are indoor plants that require natural light and minimal work. We have bird of paradise, rubber tree, dracaena marginata, fiddle leaf fig and a split leaf philodendron throughout our bedroom and living room.

Did you know that the bacteria in the soil helps to keep the air clean and reduce any gross organic compounds like formaldehyde in the air? Not to mention keeping living plants around you are said to help reduce stress.

Investing in a Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link Purifier Heater

When Jord first came home with an air purifier, I look at him like he was insane. He insisted on getting it for his allergies and the poor guy definitely struggles with those so I went with it. Then I found out how key this is for anyone to keep in their home! We have the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link Purifier Heater in both our bedroom and living room/kitchen area. You may know him as “Dylan the Dyson” when I refer to it on Instagram.

I learned that the air inside our home can be 5x dirtier than the air outside. How gross is this?! And we spend over 90% of our time indoors. If you are like me it is more like 99% since I work from home.

By having the Dyson Pure Hot + Cool Link Purifier Heater, automatically removes over 99.97% of particles in the air. It helps kill mold, reduce odors, minimize pollution and it works as a cooling fan AND heater. AKA this is amazing to have in a small space. You can control the purifier from the Dyson Link App on your phone and track the air quality in your home too.

Having an purifier near the kitchen is really helpful because with all the recipes I test, the amount of odors can be pretty gross in the kitchen. Let me just say, not everything is warmed chocolate chip cookies!

Pro tip: you can set the purifier to turn on the heat in the morning before you get out of bed so your bedroom is toasty! My friends over at Dyson taught me that gem of a trick.

Paying attention to our Cleaning Supplies

Cleaning supplies are definitely a struggle when it comes to using non-toxic products and actually using products that will clean your apartment. I really try to stay away from chlorine bleach (sorry Jord no more Clorox wipes). It is super strong and corrosive and should be avoided when you can. It is in my opinion, one of the most toxic!

I try to stay away from petroleum, ammonia, phosphate and any artificial colors. There are definitely more here than what I listed but to be honest, I had a lot of difficulty finding products that work unless you want to make a DIY cleaner at home.

This is my go to surface cleaner, laundry detergent, sport detergent (Jord’s fav!), glass cleaner.

Shoes Off at the Front Door

If my parents are reading this they are probably shaking their head at the screen. This is my #1 rule in our home ever since we moved into an apartment. It is beyond disgusting to take your shoes and walk around your home, into your bedroom and especially bathroom! Our shoes touch the ground and who knows what can be all over public bathrooms, your office, the sidewalk of NYC, etc.! Shoes off as soon as we come home, always. And if I had a dog I’d make them wear booties or have to clean their paws too 🙂

No Street Clothes on the Bed

Another way to keep our bedroom as fresh and clean as possible is keeping “street clothes” off the bed. We don’t come home in our jeans and lay on our bed or sit down in our dirty workout clothes. So many germs can get onto your blanket and pillow, etc. Pajamas and freshly washed clothes only.

Grocery shopping for Organic Food

This shouldn’t come as a surprise to most of you as you know I shop for organic when possible. I always say to stock up on organic for the dirty dozen only. You don’t need organic everything. A rule of thumb I have is “if you eat the skin of it, buy it organic”. So basically anything that has an edible skin or you eat as is, buy organic.

A few examples of what I always buy organic: apples, grapes, brussels sprouts, zucchini, peaches, mushrooms, sweet potatoes, berries, yogurts, nuts, etc. A few items I don’t buy organic: bananas, spaghetti squash, butternut squash aka anything with a thick skin!

Keeping Non-toxic Cosmetics + Skincare

I’ve never really been one to wear a ton of make up or keep a lot of beauty supplies on hand. Mostly because I have been allergic to pretty much everything since a young age. My skin is super sensitive, which is annoying but I am also thankful because it limits what I put on my face and body.

I share my skincare favorites often on my Instagram stories so none of these should come as a surprise but my favorite go-to’s are: Primally Pure deodorant, body butter, everything is amazing! (code RACHL for free lip balm with order!).

Then I also use this chia facial oil, matcha stick, shampoo, hair mask and body wash!

Okay that is what I have for you guys today! I do think this an ever evolving topic and we are always going to learn more about what we should use and stay away from. I personally try not to go too overboard here but these are a few things I think are reasonable and not too much work.

xx, Rach
