Why Goat Cheese Fritters?

Goat cheese fritters are not your average appetizer. Their unique combination of a crispy outer layer and a soft, tangy interior makes them stand out from other fried snacks. Goat cheese is naturally creamy and slightly tangy, which contrasts perfectly with the golden-brown crust from the panko breadcrumbs. They are also highly customizable — you can serve them with a drizzle of honey for a sweet twist, or pair them with a savory dip like a balsamic reduction or marinara sauce.

Additionally, the use of gluten-free panko breadcrumbs and tapioca flour in this recipe makes these fritters accessible to those with gluten sensitivities, without sacrificing taste or texture.

What You’ll Need to make these fritters:

  • Plain goat cheese log – Goat cheese is the star of the dish. Its tangy, creamy texture forms the base of the fritters. When fried, it softens into a melty, smooth filling that contrasts beautifully with the crispy outer shell.
  • Gluten-free panko breadcrumbs – I used these crackers and crushed them up in food processor. These are essential for creating that crispy, golden-brown crust on the fritters. The panko breadcrumbs are coarser than regular breadcrumbs, giving the fritters a lighter, crunchier texture.
  • Tapioca flour or arrowroot flour – Tapioca or arrowroot flour helps to create a light, even coating on the fritters before they’re fried. It’s used in the first step of dredging to adhere the egg to the cheese balls and aid in forming a crispy crust when fried.
  • Egg – The egg serves as a binder to help the breadcrumbs stick to the goat cheese. After dredging the cheese balls in tapioca flour, they’re dipped in whisked egg, which acts as glue for the panko coating.
  • Frying oil – Olive oil or avocado oil I usually use.
  • Optional: honey for topping!

Step-by-Step Instructions:

1. Prepare the Goat Cheese Balls

Start by slicing your goat cheese log into 1-inch thick slices. If you’re using a standard 4-ounce log of goat cheese, you should get about five slices per log. Once the cheese is sliced, roll each slice into a ball using the palms of your hands. Set the cheese balls aside while you prepare the dredging station.

2. Set Up the Dredging Station

To coat the goat cheese balls, you’ll need three shallow bowls. In the first bowl, add the tapioca flour (or arrowroot flour if that’s what you’re using). In the second bowl, whisk the egg until smooth. The third bowl will hold the gluten-free panko breadcrumbs (or your crushed crackers).

3. Dredge the Goat Cheese Balls

Now it’s time to coat the goat cheese balls. Working one at a time, roll each ball in the tapioca flour first. Be sure to coat the entire ball. Then, dip the ball into the whisked egg, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, roll the ball in the panko breadcrumbs, ensuring an even coating all around. Once coated, place each fritter on a plate.

4. Freeze the Goat Cheese Balls

This step is crucial! After coating the goat cheese balls, place the plate in the freezer for 10-15 minutes to let them set. Freezing the cheese balls helps them hold their shape during frying and prevents the cheese from melting too quickly in the hot oil.

5. Fry the Goat Cheese Fritters

In a medium skillet, heat about 1/2 inch of oil over medium heat. Olive oil or avocado oil works best for frying, as both oils have a high smoke point and impart a delicious flavor to the fritters.

Once the oil is hot (but not smoking), gently add the goat cheese fritters to the skillet, making sure not to overcrowd the pan. Depending on the size of your skillet, you may need to fry the fritters in batches. Fry each fritter for about 1-2 minutes per side or until the coating turns golden brown. If needed, add more oil between batches to ensure even frying.

6. Drain and Serve

After frying, transfer the goat cheese fritters to a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil. Let them cool slightly before serving. For an added touch of sweetness, drizzle the fritters with honey right before serving. The contrast of the salty, tangy goat cheese with the sweetness of honey is simply divine!

Tips for the Perfect Goat Cheese Fritters:

  • Freeze before frying: As mentioned earlier, freezing the goat cheese balls is key to keeping them intact while frying. Don’t skip this step!

  • Don’t rush the frying process: Fry the fritters over medium heat to avoid burning the breadcrumb coating. High heat may cause the outside to burn before the inside gets warm and gooey.

  • Customize the coating: If you’re feeling adventurous, experiment with different coatings! You can mix in herbs, grated Parmesan cheese, or spices with the panko breadcrumbs for extra flavor.

  • Dip options: While honey is a fantastic topping, you can also serve these fritters with a variety of dips. Try a balsamic glaze, hot honey, or even a zesty marinara sauce.

Serving Suggestions:

Goat cheese fritters are versatile and can be served in a variety of ways. Here are a few ideas to get you started:

  • As an appetizer: These fritters make an impressive starter for any meal. Pair them with a simple arugula salad for a light, yet satisfying appetizer.

  • On a charcuterie board: Elevate your charcuterie board by adding these fritters alongside cured meats, fresh fruits, nuts, and olives.

  • Topped on a salad: Add some crispy goat cheese fritters to a salad for a pop of texture and flavor. They pair particularly well with greens like arugula, spinach, or mixed baby greens, and can be drizzled with a balsamic vinaigrette for the perfect balance of flavors.

  • Party snack: If you’re hosting a gathering, these fritters are a guaranteed hit. Serve them on a platter with toothpicks for easy snacking.

Frequently Asked Questions:

  1. Can I make these goat cheese fritters ahead of time? Yes! You can prepare the goat cheese balls and freeze them until you’re ready to fry. Just take them out of the freezer when you’re ready to cook. If frozen for longer than 15 minutes, allow them to sit at room temperature for a few minutes before frying to ensure they cook evenly.
  2. What can I use if I don’t have gluten-free breadcrumbs? If you don’t have gluten-free breadcrumbs on hand, you can use crushed gluten-free crackers, cornflakes, or even almond flour as a coating. The key is to achieve a crispy, golden-brown texture on the outside of the fritters.
  3. Can I bake the fritters instead of frying them? While frying yields the crispiest results, you can bake the goat cheese fritters if you prefer a healthier option. Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C), place the fritters on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, and bake for 12-15 minutes, flipping halfway through.

Goat cheese fritters are a fun and delicious way to enjoy the rich, tangy flavor of goat cheese in a new form. The crispy, golden-brown coating paired with the creamy cheese interior is a combination that will leave your taste buds craving more. Whether you’re serving them as an appetizer, snack, or part of a salad, these fritters are sure to impress.

So next time you’re looking for an easy yet impressive dish to serve, give these gluten-free goat cheese fritters a try! And don’t forget to experiment with different toppings and dips to make them your own. Happy cooking!

  • Prep Time: 25 mins
  • Cook Time: 5 mins
  • Total Time: About 10-12 fritters

Scale
  • 8 ounces plain goat cheese log (or two 4-ounce logs)
  • 1/2 cup gluten-free panko breadcrumbs (I used these crackers and crushed them up in food processor)

Instructions

  1. Slice the goat cheese log into 1-inch slices (I got about 5 per 4-ounce log)
  2. Roll each piece into a ball with the palms of your hands and set aside
  3. Add the egg to a small shallow bowl and whisk
  4. Next add the tapioca flour to another shallow bowl and another for the breadcrumbs (so you have 3 bowls!)
  5. One by one add the goat cheese ball to tapioca flour then whisked egg, dripping off excess, then the breadcrumbs
  6. Set each goat cheese ball onto a plate then add to freezer to set for 10-15 minutes (this is key!)
