Make your own homemade Hanukkah Gelt with just one ingredient! These are such an easy DIY holiday recipe to make and kids absolutely love them.
Gelt was a staple in my childhood when it came time for Hanukkah. Those gold foiled chocolate coins were the way to my heart and the ultimate sweet Hanukkah snack for my chocolate loving self.
In case you are wondering “what is gelt?!” – Gelt are the little gold coins given typically to children during Hanukkah. Traditionally as a part of the dreidel game but I also used to get them taped onto my Hanukkah presents too. It’s typically milk chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil. Very simple but also very exciting to a child when they get them.
Making your own vegan, gluten-free and nut-free Hanukkah gelt at home is much easier than most think. You only need one ingredient: chocolate! And a silicone mold and soem gold foil to wrap it in. they stay good in the fridge for 2 months or you can keep them in the freezer for a few months. They don’t typically last long in our house though 🙂
Tip: Make different size gelt coins! We did some big and some smaller using silicone molds (the easiest way to make gelt)
What you need to make your own Hanukkah gelt:
- About 9 ounces dark chocolate chips (you may need more or less depending on how much you want to make)
- Silicone molds – I used this larger one and this smaller one
- Gold foil to wrap the gelt
How to make Hanukkah gelt in a couple easy steps:
- Melt chocolate in microwave or double boiler than fill desired amount of silicone molds with chocolate about halfway (if you are adding in toppings, do so now too!)
- Allow the chocolate to set in the fridge for about 2 hours then gently pop the coins out of the mold and wrap with gold foil and enjoy!
Tips for success:
- Make sure to use a chocolate that melts very easily. I used this dark chocolate one and melted it in the microwave. If you prefer milk chocolate, semi-sweet or a mix – you can use that too.
- Don’t forget some gold foil paper to wrap the gelt in. That gives it that special touch for sure
- Silicone molds are the easiest way to make these. The gelt pops right out that way too and I used a mix of large and small silicone molds to make the gelt
- If you want to add toppings to these homemade gelt coins you can as well like sprinkles, sea salt, coconut flakes, anything you want
- These also make for a really sweet gift for anyone too if you’re looking to make something to gift to someone for the holidays
