The viral frozen pancake hack that everyone needs to try! All you need is your favorite pancake recipe or mix and an ice cube tray to do it and your breakfast routine will be forever changed.

This ice cube tray pancake hack has been all over Tiktok the last few months. And I have to say, I was a bit hesitant at first about it. But then I tried it with my Gluten-free Cottage Cheese Pancakes and I am officially hooked on this idea. It sounds pretty basic when you think about it but the idea is a time saver and a breakfast hack that anyone can benefit from.

What exactly is the viral frozen pancake hack?

We aren’t making pancakes then freezing them. You are making your favorite pancake recipe or mix then freezing the batter in an ice cube tray. Then when you want to make pancakes, pop out a few “pancake cubes” from the tray and cook it on a skillet in just a few minutes. No mixing batter again, no cleaning bowls, or anything! It saves time and effort and I should have been doing this years ago.

What pancake recipes can I freeze in an ice cube tray?

I have yet to find a recipe that doesn’t work for this idea. I have a handful of pancake recipes here on my website that we make on repeat and any of them work for this hack:

Gluten-free Cottage Cheese Pancakes

The Easiest Gluten-free Yogurt Pancakes

Gluten-free Spinach Banana Pancakes

The Best Vegan Banana Pancakes!

Strawberry Yogurt Pancakes (gluten-free)

Or you can use your favorite pancake mix like this one.

How to do the viral pancake hack..

  1. Make your favorite pancake mix or recipe (such as the ones listed above) as you would to make pancakes and cook them
  2. Stir up everything so it’s mixed together and batter is ready
  3. Pour the pancake batter into clean ice cube trays
  4. If you want to add toppings, now is a good time. Blueberries and chocolate chips are our favorites here
  5. Add ice cube trays to freezer and let the batter set overnight
  6. Then either continue to store the batter in the ice cube tray or you can pop out the cubes and add them to a freezer bag and store that way if you need the ice cube tray for ya know – ice cubes!
  7. When you are ready to make the pancakes, simply warm a skillet and grease with butter or oil then add desired amount of pancake cubes to skillet
  8. Cook for about 5 minutes on a medium/low heat and then flip and press down gently to make sure the batter is softening
  9. Cook until ready, about another 5 minutes or so (cook time will depend on size of pancakes!)
  10. Top with desired maple syrup or yogurt anything and enjoy!

FAQs on making frozen pancake cubes:

  • What kind of ice cube tray works best? A silicone one! That way it’s easier to remove the cubes and pop them out.
  • How long do frozen pancake cubes stay good for? I like to live by the 2 month rule in the freezer. With these we typically run out pretty quick though since they are a favorite of ours to make.
  • Can this work with any pancake mix or recipe? I haven’t found one yet that doesn’t work for me. I think the batter should be on the thicker side though!
  • How long does it take to freeze the pancake batter? At least 5-6 hours so they are firm. I like to let them set overnight. But the purpose of this is to food prep with it. So you really aren’t rushing to use them hours later!
