HOLY ISH GUYS. This is the ultimate recipe to make right now. It combines two favorites: smash burgers with tacos. And you will freak over how easy they are to make too. My husband and I stood over the counter eating them fresh off the stove and immediately went back to make more. We had to try them after seeing @chilesandsmoke make this.

I love that you can use any burger toppings you want to for this, any tortillas and in reality you can use ground turkey or chicken too if beef isn’t your thing. But the crispy beef is truly unbeatable in my opinion.

This is an easy weeknight recipe to make for you, your friends, your family, anyone! You really can’t go wrong with this taco burger combo and it’s a fan favorite for sure.

Whats in these smash burger tacos:

  • Ground beef – I look for grass-fed/grass-finished for beef always! You can also use a ground chicken or turkey too but the beef gets crispiest
  • Garlic powder and onion powder – you can also add in other spices you love too
  • Gluten-free flour tortillas OR corn tortillas – you pick! And if not gluten-free, use regular tortillas
  • Cheddar cheese – or your favorite cheese for burgers
  • Burger toppings: lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, special sauce, etc.

How to make smash burger tacos:

  1. First portion the beef and season, you want to make the beef about a small golf-ball size depending on your tortillas
  2. Next set up your tortillas and desired toppings so they are close by to the stove
  3. Heat up a large skillet or griddle to high heat then on the back burner add another pan and heat on low heat
  4. Place the beef on the skillet then add tortilla on top and smash it down (I used a another skillet to smash it) and depending on skillet size, you can do more than 1 at a time
  5. Make sure the tortilla is pressing down so the burger is thin and cook for about 3 minutes and gently flip over
  6. Remove from skillet and add to the skillet behind it to crisp the other side of the tortilla (I do this because skillet can get greasy so it’s good to use a new one)
  7. Quickly add the cheese at this time and crisp tortilla for about 2-3 minutes
  8. Remove from heat and add desired toppings and enjoy while warm!

FAQS on making Burger Tacos:

  • Do the tortillas get soggy from the burger? They can yes! Since we cook these on a skillet on the stove, it can get oily on the skillet. That’s why I recommend in the directions to crisp on a skillet behind on another burner once you flip. This is also when I add toppings.
  • How will I know if the meat is done? Typically it doesn’t need more than 3 minutes. You smash the burger down and it’s super thin so it won’t need to cook more than 3 minutes or so.
  • Can you use any tortillas? Yes really any tortillas can work work here. The flour-based ones are more durable than corn but you can use corn too.
  • Do these tacos reheat well? Not ideal in my experience. I recommend eating them fresh but you can of course save the leftovers and reheat on a skillet within 3 days of making.
