This is my mama and Jordan’s favorite pasta dish ever!

Anytime we are out to dinner and I see a broccoli rabe and sausage pasta – I always think of my mom. She also used to make this for our family all the time growing up. Except we all hated broccoli rabe besides her ha! At the time I hated it but now I love love love my broccoli rabe. I also think it is because I finally nailed down the method on how to make it so it isn’t bitter.

You will see below that it is all about boiling the broccoli rabe then sautéing it. With the fresh squeeze of lemon – SO good.

I love that this pasta dish also sneaks in some veggies and protein from both the beans and the sausage. Usually I am hungry an hour or so later after pasta because there isn’t protein in it. But that isn’t the case with this recipe. I am always so satisfied by it with the mix-in’s.

It is easy to prepare and a healthier version of the classic pasta dish and it is so flavorful. 

What ingredients you need to make this healthier broccoli rabe and sausage pasta dish:

  • Ground sausage of choice
  • Small onion
  • Garlic cloves
  • Avocado or olive oil
  • Broccoli rabe
  • Gluten-free pasta
  • Bone broth or vegetable broth
  • Cannelloni beans, rinse well from can
  • Red pepper flakes and parmesan cheese for topping

How to cook broccoli rabe and sausage pasta:

  1. In a large skillet, cook the ground sausage on medium heat for about 5-7 minutes or until fully cooked
  2. Remove sausage from skillet (I put mine on a paper towel lined plate/bowl to absorb the excess oil/fat)
  3. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and cook the broccoli rabe in the pot for about 5 minutes as you cook onion and garlic
  4. Add the oil, onion and garlic to the skillet from the pork and cook on medium high heat as the broccoli rabe cooks
  5. After 5 minutes of the broccoli rabe boiling in water, remove and add directly to the skillet with onions and garlic and cook for about 10 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally
  6. As that cooks, boil fresh water in the pot and cook pasta per instructions on package
  7. Add the bone broth, cooked pork and beans to the skillet and simmer for a few minutes
  8. Add in the strained pasta to the skillet and mix well
  9. Serve while warm and sprinkle some red pepper flakes, fresh squeeze of lemon juice and cheeses on top and enjoy!
