This healthy French Onion Dip always hits the spot. It is such an easy dip recipe to make and healthier than the traditional version. Plus this recipe is high in protein and is absolutely delicious.

I am obsessed with french onion dip. It’s not something I make often enough. But now that I have this high protein version, I have a feeling I will be making this all the time. It always hits the spot for a savory snack and it’s great to serve as an appetizer for parties, game day, anything!

You can whip this up with minimal effort. Truly the only time consuming part is letting the onions caramelize a bit. Which can take anywhere for 30 to 60 minutes, but you can even do that the day before serving to save on time.

I love serving this with some potato chips, veggies, anything. Everyone always loves this recipe and when I tell them it’s even high in protein, they don’t believe me! But by using greek yogurt and cottage cheese as the base, it makes this more filling and nutritious than the usual onion dip.

I can promise you that you have never had a healthy french onion dip like this one. It’s such a quick and easy recipe that is the perfect amount of salty, creamy and rich. It always hits the spot and it is even great to store leftover in the fridge to pack for work or snack on the next day.

What ingredients you need to make healthy French Onion Dip:

  • Sweet white onions – I like to thinly slice mine but you can chop them too
  • Unsalted butter – or use olive oil if you prefer over butter
  • Greek yogurt – feel free to sub with more cottage cheese if you want but I would blend it so it’s not too chunk
  • Cottage cheese – if you prefer to use mayonnaise or greek yogurt, you can
  • Garlic powder – you can also add in more spices but I like the garlic powder addition and the onions mixed together for flavor
  • Chives – fresh chives in this are SO good!! Highly recommend adding in

How to make caramelized onion dip:

  1. In a large skillet, add butter and melt over medium/high heat
  2. Add in onions and cook for 5 to 6 minutes on medium heat, stirring occasionally
  3. Then add salt and pepper to taste here and mix around
  4. Turn heat to low and cover and cook for 30 to 60 minutes or until onions are golden brown and caramelized (stirring occasionally)
  5. While onions cook, mix together yogurt, cottage cheese and garlic powder in a large bowl and set aside
  6. When onions have cooked and cooled a bit, add to dip then add in chives and mix together
  7. Serve with desired crackers, chips or veggies!

FAQs and tips on making this onion dip:

  • What kind of ovens do you use in this dip? I usually use sweet white onions. I find those are best flavor wise but if you prefer another onion, that’s fine too.
  • Can I use something else instead of yogurt and cottage cheese? Yup! You can sub those for one another for sure. Or use mayonnaise if you want. I personally prefer the cottage cheese and yogurt mix though.
  • What is the best way to store this? In the fridge for 5 days. Leave it out for a few minutes before serving.
  • What do you serve with this? Potato chips, veggie sticks, crackers, toasted bread, anything you’d like.
