How mad are you guys that I have been teasing this recipe now for about a month?

Sorry friends!!! But I promise that this paleo crisp was well worth the wait. Plus it gave me more time to make it a few more times and perfect it for you!

An epic Paleo Apple Pear Crisp just the holidays.

Thanksgiving is basically here and while most of us consider pies to be the best kind of dessert to bring, I prefer the crisps. Plus this dessert is super low in sugar so it can also be a great breakfast recipe or Thanksgiving brunch idea if that is your thing.

What I love most about this crisp is that you don’t have to choose one fruit. I personally haven’t had a pear and apple crisp in my life. So not sure if that really even exists, but I am happy that this one does now because these two fruits mixed together is SO good.

Now let’s talk about the epic grain-free crumb topping…

When you think of crumb cake or crisps, you probably assume there are boat loads of butter and sugar in it. And while you can make this with butter, there is only a couple tablespoons of added sugar in the whole recipe. It is so good and has the best flavor to it. Plus the crumbs that are on top add the best crunch when you pair it with ice cream or some coconut yogurt.

What you will need for this recipe:

  • Organic apples + pears. The base for this crisp! When these gems aren’t in season, you can also use peaches or another fruit you are craving!
  • Cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice and ginger. The main 4 seasonings you will need. You can also use apple pie spice too.
  • Pasture-Raised butter, ghee or softened coconut oil. Any of these will work, but please make sure they are softened and not melted or too firm.
  • Almond flour. I haven’t tried another flour here. Coconut won’t work but oat flour may.
  • Raw nuts. I used a mix of almonds and pecans. You can use any nut you have on hand. Roasted nuts work too.
  • Unsweetened coconut flakes. I haven’t tested another sub for this but if you don’t have them, maybe use some more nuts.

  • Prep Time: 5 mins
  • Cook Time: 40 mins
  • Total Time: 45 mins

Yield: 4-5 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

Base:

  • 2 large pears (I used Asian pears)
  • 3 organic honey crisp apples (or your preferred apple)
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon melted coconut oil

Crumb topping:

  • 5 tablespoons softened pasture-raised butter, ghee or coconut oil
  • 2 tablespoons maple syrup*
  • 1 cup raw almonds
  • 1/2 cup raw pecans
  • 1/2 cup almond flour*
  • 2/3 cup unsweetened coconut flakes
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon allspice
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees
  2. Wash and slice the pears and apples and add to a 9-inch baking dish (round or square works)
  3. Coat the apples and pears in coconut oil and cinnamon and mix well
  4. In a food processor, pulse together the crumb ingredients a few times until a crumb-like dough forms
  5. Add the crumb topping on top of the apples and pears and make sure it is covering majority of the dish
  6. Bake in oven for 40-45 minutes and serve while warm
  7. If topping with ice cream or yogurt, I recommend adding to plate then adding it so it doesn’t melt in hot dish

Notes

*I haven’t tested flour subs yet but oat flour would also work if not paleo. Please don’t sub coconut flour

*You can use honey instead of maple syrup if preferred
