These Bang Bang Chicken Skewers are one of our favorite ways to switch things up from the usual chicken recipes. It’s an easy, flavorful and delicious chicken recipe using homemade bang bang sauce. Made with all gluten-free and nut-free ingredients, this is going to be your new go-to!

This recipe is one of the most popular chicken recipes all over. It’s a well-known dish at many restaurants, it’s all over the internet and people everywhere are obsessing over bang bang chicken! It is inspired by the famous Bonefish Grill and their bang bang shrimp. But instead, we are making these delicious chicken kabobs.

This chicken recipe is a great way to switch things up from the usual chicken dish you may love. I love how this chicken is moist, flavorful and the sauce is creamy, a little sweet and tangy and has a little kick to it. It’s incredibly easy to make this dish too. You can use a grill, oven or even the air fryer if you want.

If you want to cook these for a barbecue, dinner party or a random dinner – they will hit the spot. Cooking the chicken in half the sauce really helps the chicken stay moist and makes it super flavorful. My husband went back for seconds the first time he had this because of how obsessed he was.

You can also add this recipe on top of a salad if you want or just enjoy with your go-to side dishes. You’d never second guess that this recipe is also gluten-free, nut-free and healthier than the restaurant version of bang bang chicken.

I cannot wait to hear what you think. Please let me know if you try it too!

What ingredients are in these easy bang bang chicken skewers:

  • Boneless skinless chicken breasts or thighs – you can use a mix of both or pick one or the other for the skewers
  • Plain yogurt – I like to use plain greek yogurt for this. Traditionally bang bang chicken has mayo but I love the yogurt swap
  • Sweet chili sauce – this is pretty key in the recipe for flavor
  • Honey – add for sweetness to the chicken!
  • Sriracha – added for flavor. Oddly enough you can sub ketchup too if you wanted
  • Ground ginger – you could use freshly minced ginger too
  • Coconut aminos – or sub soy sauce or tamari if you prefer
  • Garlic – I love adding fresh garlic cloves to this dish in the sauce

How to make bang bang chicken skewers:

  1. Preheat oven or grill to 425 degres F
  2. Add chicken cubes to wooden skewers, leaving some space in between
  3. Mix the sauce ingredients together then brush some of the sauce on top of the chicken, leaving half for after it cooks
  4. Cook the skewers on the grill for 6-8 minutes per side OR bake in the oven for 15-20 minutes, flipping halfway, chicken shoot be 165 degrees F when cooked
  5. Add more sauce as desired to chicken (I brush it on top), garnish with scallions and enjoy!

FAQs and tips on making bang bang chicken:

  • Do I have to make these into skewers? You can cook them as individual chicken pieces if you prefer! Cook time would slightly less. Just cook on a greased baking sheet. If grilling, add to a grill basket of sorts or the pieces all fall through.
  • My wooden skewers burned? If you soak the wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes, this can prevent the skewers from charring during cooking. Or you can use metal skewers if you prefer too.
  • Can I use another protein instead of chicken? Sure! The cook time will vary based off what you use but salmon or shrimp are both great in this recipe with the bang bang sauce.
  • I thought bang bang sauce was mayonnaise based? It is! But I wanted to switch things up and do a greek yogurt version so it’s higher in protein and for all my mayo-haters, this will be for you!
  • Use a mix of chicken breasts or thighs for ultimate flavor! I love doing a mix but you can do all chicken breast or thighs if you prefer.
