THIS PIZZA IS LIFE! Truly the best combination in the world IMO. I love a white pie because I am not a huge fan of tomato sauce whatsoever. I will eat it on pizzas and such but my preference is 10000% cheesy pizzas.

The real stars of the show here are the crispy basil on top and the caramelized onions. We caramelize both red onions and white onion here, which is an actual flavor bomb in your mouth. Plus the crispy basil for both flavor and texture – wow wow wow. Crispy basil I have been adding to everything since making this. Pastas, eggs, anything. It is such a game changer.

You can also use any pizza crust you want for this. Since Jord is eating gluten-free now, we are trying out all different kinds. This one is chickpea based and it was actually very very good. And you don’t even taste the chickpeas too. The flavors all over this pizza take over anyways. I have a feeling you guys are going to love this recipe and pizza combo so much. Maybe one day we can get this bad boy at a restaurant because I am telling you…crispy basil – SO in right now.

What ingredients are in this white pie:

  • Red onion, sliced thin
  • White onion, sliced thin
  • Pizza crust of choice (we used a frozen gluten-free one)
  • Fresh mozzarella, sliced into 1/2 inch rounds
  • Shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Ricotta salata, shredded
  • Basil leaves, sliced thin into strips

How to make this epic white pizza with caramelized onions and crispy basil:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees (or whatever the dough instructions say!)
  2. Grease a large skillet with some oil and add the onions and cook over medium heat for about 5-8 minutes, or until caramelized. I also like to do this ahead of time and let them simmer covered to really caramelize
  3. Place the pizza crust on a pizza stone or baking sheet
  4. Add the mozzarella slices and the shredded mozzarella to the pizza crust then sprinkle onions on top (use desired amount)
  5. Cook in oven for about 8 minutes or until cheese is ready
  6. While pizza cooks, grease a small skillet with some oil and cook the basil strips over medium heat for about 8 minutes, stirring occasionally then remove from heat
  7. Top the pizza with ricotta salata and crispy basil, slice and enjoy!
